No Deal Brexit: European Parliament confirms visa free travel for Brits

The European Parliament has voted to let Brits travel in the EU without a visa after Brexit - but only if Britain does the same.

In good news for holiday makers, it confirmed that UK citizens will retain the right to travel to the European Union without visas after Brexit.

But the proposal was faced with weeks of delay, following controversy over the way the draft legislation dubs Gibraltar a UK "colony".

MEPs backed the change 502 votes to 8.

British tourists will become “third-country nationals” when Brexit goes ahead - similar to citizens from Australia, Japan and the US - under the rule change, they will be allowed to travel without a visa.

However, if Britain changes the rules on travel for EU citizens it includes provisions for the EU to clamp down on the travel arrangements.

A statement released by the European Parliament said: “The legislation will apply from the day following the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union.”

“The United Kingdom will be included in the list of more than 60 third-countries and territories whose nationals do not need to request a visa to enter the EU for business, tourism or to visit relatives or friends.

“The visa exemption does not provide for the right to work in the EU."
