'No criminal offence' say police as girl falls off bike trying to pass people

Police have moved to say a viral video of a girl falling off her bike when trying to get past two people was "not a criminal offence".

Nottinghamshire Police have said the incident was a "misunderstanding" after the young girl was left in tears when she fell off her bike.

Footage circulating on social media from May 12 shows the girl cycling behind a man and a woman who are walking a dog along the Blackwell Trail near Huthwaite and South Normanton on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border.

The girl’s dad can be heard shouting ‘excuse me’ so she can get through.

But neither move and the girl crashes into them, falling off her bike and bursting into tears.

The dad asks for an apology but a man appears to kick the girl’s bike and walks off.

Police have reviewed the footage and urged people on being aware of their surroundings under lockdown.

Detective Superintendent Kev Broadhead, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We have reviewed the footage and do not believe this was a criminal offence.

“The couple involved also called us about the incident and we are satisfied that what took place was a misunderstanding between the two parties and they have both been updated as such.

“We re-iterate our former messaging about being extra aware of our surroundings and considerate of others.

"More people are now walking, cycling and jogging along our pathways in line with the government's new guidance, all going at different speeds and we've got to share our open spaces with social distancing in mind.”
