No coronavirus cases in one of our worst affected ICUs in more than a month

There have been no cases of coronavirus in the ICU ward of the Royal Gwent hospital in over a month, Aneurin Bevan University health board has confirmed.

There have been no confirmed Covid-19 case in either of the health board's intensive care units, in both the Gwent and in Abergavenny's Nevill Hall hospital, since June 19.

The health board also announced that no members of staff have tested positive for the virus in over a month - since June 27.

A statement from the health board said: "Aneurin Bevan University Health Board are very pleased to confirm that since June 27 no members of staff from the Health Board have tested positive for COVID-19 and there have been no confirmed cases of COVID in our intensive care units since June 19.

"We are immensely proud of how staff and importantly the public have responded to the pandemic.

"Adherence to social distancing measures, compliance to Welsh Government guidelines and the health and safety measures implemented across the Health Board have helped to reduce the number of COVID cases across Gwent.

"We would like to sincerely thank the public for the ongoing support in helping us to keep communities safe and the local NHS functional and responsive."

The news that there were no longer any coronavirus patients at the Royal Gwent was fist confirmed a the beginning of July, a major milestone for one of the worst affected hospitals in Wales.

At that point, a spokesperson for Aneurin Bevan health board emphasised the importance of maintaining the good work that had led to the number of cases falling: "It is important to remember that this virus is still circulating within our communities and the advice remains the same that it is important we continue to follow Welsh Government guidance to keep Wales safe."

At its peak, Newport was statistically the most heavily affected local authority in the United Kingdom in terms of diagnosed coronavirus cases.

Newport saw one of the highest number of infections outside of London when the pandemic took hold, and at the height of the crisis in April, over half of the staff working in the Gwent's A&E department tested positive for Covid-19.
