'No chance' - Liverpool legend on the time Jose Mourinho tried to take Steven Gerrard to Chelsea

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says there was “no chance” of Jose Mourinho luring Steven Gerrard to Chelsea from Anfield back in 2005.

The two sides squared up to each other in the League Cup final at the Cardiff City Stadium that year, with the Blues coming out on top, winning 3-2 in what proved to be a dramatic final.

But that was only half the story as Chelsea were keen on signing Liverpool star Gerrard, who had been at Anfield since the age of just nine-years-old.

Despite Mourinho’s interest in landing Gerrard, Carragher, who has been revealing his fondest memories of clashes between the two clubs ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting at Stamford Bridge, says there was “no chance” of the move happening, despite Mourinho, according to Carragher, being the best manager in the world at the time.

Carragher, reflecting on his memories of Blues versus Reds clashes on Sky Sports, said: “That was the cup final in Cardiff. The big thing about that was that Chelsea were trying to buy Steven Gerrard at the time, it was the first trophy for (Jose) Mourinho, Gerrard considered going, Chelsea looked unstoppable.

“I think Mourinho, at that time, was the best manager in the world, everyone wanted to play for him.

"We got to the bottom of it, don't worry about that, Jose thinking he could come to Liverpool and take our man, no chance.”

Gerrard, of course, stayed with Liverpool until the end of the 2014/15 season before joining LA Galaxy.
