No bailout for Vine over credit crunch joke

Jeremy Vine
Jeremy Vine: cashing in on the economic crisis? Photograph: BBC

Radio 2 host Jeremy Vine's face was left redder than an Icelandic bank's balance sheet this week while compering a Press Club dinner. The Independent reports that he kicked off with a joke about "Barclays bank, or the government bank, as we must now call it". Cue silence - Barclays isn't taking any state cash. Vine subsequently trotted over to apologise to a table filled with Barclays employees. Stick to the day job, Jeremy.

Update: Monkey hears Jezza did the charity gig for free. And it was all in aid of elderly journalists. So perhaps the slip of the tongue should be excused.
