No bail for second man charged in 2013 Logan Square slaying

June 13--A second man was denied bail Friday afternoon in connection with a 2013 slaying of a man who was returning home from work but was killed in an attempted robbery in Logan Square.

Mario Ortega, 20, was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and attempted robbery in the Dec. 12, 2013 slaying of Cayetano Sandoval, prosecutors said.

Sandoval had been returning home to his wife after a night shift at the Avondale bakery where he worked for 20 years. He parked his van and began to walk to his home in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue. While on the sidewalk, Ortega and Joshua Johnson, 23, both members of the Latin Kings street gang, attacked Sandoval, said prosecutors Friday.

Johnson, 23, of Elk Grove Village, was charged in May with first-degree murder and attempted robbery in Sandoval's killing.

Prosecutors said Ortega, also known as "King Krazy," ran up behind Sandoval and began to beat him in the head and face with his fists. Johnson held Sandoval down and went through his pockets and demanded money during the beating, said prosecutors.

Witnesses near the scene heard Sandoval screaming for help, prosecutors said.

After the beating, Ortega stood over Sandoval and fired several shots. A witness to the slaying told police he heard Sandoval moaning before he went motionless. Sandoval was pronounced dead later that morning, the prosecutor said.

The shooting was caught on surveillance video and was witnessed by several neighbors "who were looking out their windows at or around the time of the murder," the prosecutor said.

Five 9-millimeter shell casings were found at the scene.

Johnson has two felony convictions, according to court documents, including a 2012 burglary in DuPage County and a 2011 attempted residential burglary charge in Cook County.

According to prosecutors, he was discharged from parole in 2013. He is currently being held with no bail.

Ortega appeared in court Friday where he was denied bail by Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. Ortega is also facing another separate murder case.
