Bail was denied Saturday for a man accused of attacking an acquaintance at a Far South Side gas station and later shooting the man after he tried to drive away.
Jacob D. Taylor, 24, of Riverdale, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm in the incident, according to Cook County prosecutors and court records.
Early June 1, the 35-year-old acquaintance of Taylor was stopped at a gas station in the 9900 block of South Halsted Street when Taylor and another man pulled up in separate tow trucks, according to prosecutors and police, who said Taylor’s arrival was seen on surveillance footage.
Taylor reached out to shake the 35-year-old man’s hand, but instead began punching him, according to prosecutors, who did not say what prompted the beating. The other tow truck drive then joined in on the attack.
The 35-year-old returned to his vehicle and started driving away, prosecutors said. Taylor first threw something at the 35-year-old’s vehicle, shattering a window, and then followed him in his tow truck.
When Taylor pulled alongside the 35-year-old, Taylor fired a with a gun, shattering another window and striking the man in his left thigh, prosecutors said. The wounded man drove himself to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment.
Taylor was taken into custody for questioning Thursday and subsequently charged, prosecutors said. Investigators also learned he was wanted on an arrest warrant out of north suburban Lake County.
Prosecutors said Taylor was convicted of a misdemeanor count of reckless driving in 2017, but had no other criminal history.
Taylor’s defense attorney told Judge Mary Marubio that Taylor graduated from Hyde Park Academy High School and briefly attended two colleges.
Marubio ordered Taylor held without bail and set his next court date for Thursday.
