April 02--A man was denied bail Thursday afternoon after prosecutors said he fatally shot a gang rival in an alley behind a Cragin neighborhood Dunkin' Donuts.
Stephon Gill, 21, of the 4800 block of West Wabansia Avenue, was charged Thursday morning with first-degree murder in the March 25 slaying of Edgar Muneton, officials said.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m. that day, Muneton was with several people inside a Dunkin' Donuts in the 5200 block of West Fullerton Avenue when another group started hitting the window.
Prosecutors said Muneton belonged to the Latin Kings street gang, and the group who was with Gill were members of the Latin Style street gang.
Preliminary information said they were trying to get Muneton and the people he was with to come outside. Muneton and his friends instead tried to go to the washroom, but Dunkin' Donuts employees told them they could not. Soon after, the group that was outside entered the business, and a fight ensued, police said.
The fight moved into the Dunkin' Donuts' kitchen where two of the people with Gill cornered a 21-year-old man and beat him with their hands and a broom. Gill then chased Muneton and an 18-year-old man toward an exit, said prosecutors.
Gill caught up with the two and pistol whipped them both, causing head lacerations. Muneton tried to flee out of the exit door, but when he ran into an alley, Gill fired three shots at him, prosecutors said.
Video surveillance footage captured Gill going back into the store and then exiting through a front door with another person, prosecutors said.
Gill also was seen following Muneton while firing at him.
Muneton, 25, of the 2700 block of South Neva Avenue, was shot multiple times and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:24 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
According to court documents, the fatal shooting spurred from an incident that happened a few weeks earlier. According to Gill, a fellow Latin Styler was jumped by Muneton and his friends while he was his child, said prosecutors.
Gill, who was on probation during the fatal shooting for two 2013 drug convictions, was arrested Tuesday. He was denied bail Thursday afternoon when he appeared at Central Bond Court.
His next court date was scheduled for April 21.
