No babies were named Carol or Nigel in 2020, making the names officially 'extinct'

While names such as Olivia and Oliver topped the baby name charts in both the North East and nationally - other names have been officially declared 'extinct', and others in danger of heading the same way.

The most popular baby names this year included traditional choices such as Florence and Matilda, current day trends also influenced parent's choices with moguls such as Otis and Margot ranking up higher than previous years.

But according to the Office for National Statistics, many there were also names which not a single baby was named this year, which have been declared extinct.

According to the data, no boys were called Nigel in 2020, and no girls were called Carol - making the names 'extinct'.

It is worth baring in mind that the ONS only records a name if three or more children are called by it, for data protection purposes, so there could be two little Nigels out there somewhere.

Interestingly, the chart isn't filled with outdated archaic names - in fact, there's quite a lot of names mentioned which previously were very popular.

The name Piers is also struggling, with just four babies registered with the name in 2020.

Meanwhile, there are only three Gregs and only eight boys called Stuart.

Three babies were called Brad and Billie respectively.

In the girls category there were only 14 Carlys, only seven girls were registered with the name Carrie, while three were given the name Cheryl.
