There is no indication any Australians were injured in the thwarted military coup in Turkey, Australia’s foreign minister, Julie Bishop, has said.

The government has urged anyone in the country trying to leave to contact their travel agent and airline and has consular officials at Turkish airports to help.

Australia supported the democratically elected government in Turkey, the foreign affairs minister told ABC TV on Sunday.

The prime minister, Malcom Turnbull, said that within a few hours of the attempted coup’s beginning, he had contacted Australia’s ambassador in Ankara, and remained in contact with the Turkish government.

“At this stage, it appears the coup has has failed,” Turnbull told reporters at the HMAS Darwin in Sydney on Sunday.

He echoed Bishop’s support of the government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “As I said yesterday, Australia supports the democratically elected government of Turkey and its democratic institutions.

“We call on parties to respect them, and we call on all parties to show calm and restraint in this difficult period in Turkey.”

Australian Associated Press contributed to this report.
