No arrests in West Lothian after Rangers fans take to streets following Celtic match

No arrests were made following disruption in West Lothian on Sunday after boozed up Rangers fans took to the streets.

Crowds of Rangers supporters were pictured gathered in Armadale on Sunday after the team's 1-1 draw with Celtic.

Football fans had been ordered to stay at home by police and their clubs, with Police Scotland praising the "vast majority" who did so.

But cops were called to Armadale on Sunday after reports of a large gathering, bringing the area to a standstill after roads were closed off.

Fans were captured setting off flares, and enjoying a boozy party while they held blue flags and Union Jacks.

A force spokesperson told Edinburgh Live : “Officers received reports of a large crowd having gathered in Armadale around 2.40pm on Sunday, 21 March, 2021.

"Local road closures were put in place for a short period of time and roads reopened around 3.45pm. The crowd dispersed and no arrests were made.”

Assistant chief constable Bernard Higgins thanked the "vast majority" of fans from both clubs who followed the rules.

He said: "I'd like to thank the vast majority of fans from both clubs who took responsibility to prevent the spread of coronavirus by staying at home and not gathering at Celtic Park or anywhere else.

"Where small groups of people did gather, officers engaged and encouraged them to disperse and return home.

"The clear message to all supporters as the football season continues over the coming weeks is to stay safe by staying at home and please do not gather in large groups."
