Despite scenes in the capital which saw fans trying to break into the stadium and acting violently - Liverpool was reportedly mainly incident free.

Officers also said they saw people adhering to coronavirus restrictions and enjoying the 'fantastic atmosphere.'

Superintendent Diane Pownall, said: "England played their hearts out tonight and the country as a whole, including people across Merseyside, were right behind them enjoying the match.

"The atmosphere across the region was fantastic and on the whole people adhered to the Covid restrictions in place and enjoyed the game safely.

"I would like to thank licensees across Merseyside who made sure their pubs and bars were Covid compliant and all the members of the public who showed why Merseyside is a great county.

"I would like to thank our officers, staff and Special Constabulary, together with our partners, including: Liverpool City Council: Knowsley Council: Sefton Council; St Helens Council; Wirral Council; British Transport Police; North West Ambulance Service; Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseytravel, for the planning and effort they have put in to ensure the success of this momentous event for the country."
