'No apologies': Woman admits causing crash that killed former ACT opposition leader's son

Former ACT opposition leader Bill Stefaniak says the woman who pleaded guilty to causing the crash that killed his son has not apologised to his family.

Angela Smith, 34, was driving the car with Jozef Stefaniak and another man, 21-year-old Kane Kell, as passengers, when it crashed on Yarra Glen in Hughes on January 2.

Mr Stefaniak was thrown from the car after it rolled, and Smith ran from the scene before police arrived.

Mr Kell was initially charged over the crash, but the charges were dropped and Smith was arrested instead.

In court today Smith pleaded guilty to causing the crash.

The case was expected to go to trial next month.

Bill Stefaniak, who served as ACT opposition leader in the mid-2000s, said neither party had approached the Stefaniak family to apologise.

"We have not been contacted, not even through third parties and that's something that certainly rankles with us," he said.

"It would have been something at least if they hadn't bolted from the scene and tried to blame Joe for being the driver.

"We've had none of that, no regrets, no apologies, nothing."

Mr Stefaniak's wife Shirley Stefaniak said despite the fact Smith remained in custody, she felt "jealous" of the woman responsible for her son's death.

"I feel jealous of her because she's going home to her children. Joe's not coming home to us," she said.

Mr Stefaniak said the plea of guilty did little to soothe the pain of losing his son.

"At least it saves the court and the witnesses the trouble of actually attending, and I think that's for the good," he said.

Smith will be sentenced in December.
