DALLAS _ It's over at the Cotton Bowl.
No. 20 Oklahoma beat Texas, 45-40.
It was a hard-fought, mostly back-and-forth game, with a third quarter scoring burst that made this look more like the Red River Shootout again, not the Red River Showdown.
Texas' defense with Charlie Strong calling the shots showed improvement in overall energy and tackling, but not in the yards or points department. The Sooners' 672 yards was the most a team has put up against Texas since the Sooners had 677 yards in the 2012 Texas-OU game.
The Longhorns recorded their first _ and second _ interceptions of the season. Both were by Dylan Haines. And Texas forced four turnovers on the day. But those four turnovers yielded only a field goal.
The Longhorns allowed huge games for Oklahoma's three top offensive weapons. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was 22-of-31 for 390 yards, three touchdowns and two picks; running back Samaje Perine rushed for 214 yards and two scores on 35 carries; and wide receiver Dede Westbrook ripped Texas for 232 receiving yards and touchdowns of 71, 42 and 47 yards on 10 catches.
Mayfield's 390 yards were the most for a Sooners quarterback in Texas-OU history. Westbrook 232 yards were also most by a receiver.
Texas' running game missed Chris Warren III. Oh, D'Onta Foreman had 25 carries and finished with 159 yards and two touchdowns _ his best game of the season, bettering his 157-yard effort against Cal and his 148-yard night against Notre Dame _ but the Longhorns were clearly missing that second part of a 1-2 backfield punch. Kyle Forman had six carries for only 16 yards.
Tyrone Swoopes had only four carries for seven yards.
Shane Buechele was 19-of-36 for 245 yards and three touchdowns. He was picked off once. Statistically, this was his second best game of the season.
With the loss, Texas drops to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12. The Longhorns have dropped three straight games and the defense has now allowed opponents 50, 49, 47 and 45 points so far.
