No. 13 Kentucky's offense stalls in overtime loss at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas _ Kentucky's defense did everything it could.

But the offense couldn't do anything.

In the fourth quarter in front of 99,829 at Kyle Field, Darius West brought the Cats back to life after a lifeless second half with his 40-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to even it up, 14-14.

Then Texas A&M needed overtime to put No. 13 Kentucky away, 20-14, on Saturday night via a Trayveon Williams 10-yard touchdown run.

In their first meeting in 65 years, the Cats managed just 178 yards of total offense against the Aggies, who amassed 390 yards behind Kellen Mond's 18-for-29 passing for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

Williams added 138 yards and the winning score for Texas A&M.

The Cats' own overtime drive ended in a sack of Terry Wilson that turned into a 43-yard field goal for Miles Butler that pinged off the cross bar and gave the ball back to the Aggies and set them up for the victory.

Early on, Kentucky looked cool, calm and comfortable on both sides of the ball, grabbing the lead 7-0 early on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Lynn Bowden late in the first quarter.

On the other side, the defense forced the Aggies to go 1-for-6 on their first seven third-down attempts. They punted on three of their first four drives and had another end on downs.

Texas A&M (4-2, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) connected on its final four third downs, though, and scored on a third-and-goal when Mond found Quartney Davis for a 3-yard pass with 1:14 left in the first half to even it up 7-7.

Kentucky's final three drives of the first half went three plays and out, with the Cats managing just four yards in the second quarter.

Against the league's best run defense, UK had just 39 rushing yards in the first half, including just six carries for 23 yards for Benny Snell.

Snell ended the game with 13 carries for 60 yards.

With Kash Daniel sitting out the rest of his targeting suspension in the first half, his backup, true freshman Chris Oats, had four tackles in his place, including 1.5 for loss and a sack.

Edwards led the way for the Cats' defense in the first half with six tackles, including two for loss.

Early in the fourth quarter, Texas A&M grabbed the lead 14-7 on a 48-yard pass from Mond to tight end Jace Sternberger that broke the game open.

While Kentucky's defense was doing its best to contain the Aggies, the Cats' offense stalled completely.

Kentucky (5-1, 3-1) punted on seven straight drives and six of those were three-and-outs. On the next seven drives following that Bowden score, UK managed 22 total yards of offense.

In the first four quarters, Kentucky never ran a play on Texas A&M's side of the field.

In regulation, UK was outgained 365-178 yards, including 226-104 passing and 139-74 rushing. The Cats went 2-for-12 on third-down attempts.
