No. 12 Virginia cruises past No. 14 Notre Dame, 71-54

SOUTH BEND, Ind. _ Virginia is the only ACC team Notre Dame hasn't defeated since joining the conference in 2013-14.

London Perrantes made sure that remained the case Tuesday night at Purcell Pavilion when his 22 points led No. 12 Cavaliers past the 14th-ranked Irish, 71-54.

Bonzie Colson led Notre Dame with 20 points while Steve Vasturia added 14 points and Matt Farrell eight.

But the Irish didn't have an answer for Perrantes, who made five 3-pointers.

Isaiah Wilkins had 13 points while Devon Hall scored 11 points for the Cavaliers. Marial Shayok scored 10 points. Ty Jerome scored all eight of his points in the second half, including two 3-pointers to help Virginia open up a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

The Irish (17-4, 6-2 ACC) have lost two of their last three games while the Cavaliers (16-3, 6-2) won their fifth straight.

Tuesday marked the fifth meeting between the schools since the Irish joined the conference.

The game featured an intriguing contrast in styles.

The Irish came in averaging 76.7 points in the ACC games. Virginia was the top scoring defense in the conference, allowing 62.7 points.

The first half was played at Virginia's pace as the Cavaliers held the Irish to a season-low 26 points. Notre Dame made only 2 of 10 3-pointers.

Forward V.J. Beachem scored 30 points in Notre Dame's 84-66 victory against Syracuse on Saturday. He struggled out of the gate on Tuesday, missing all four of his shots in the first half, and finished with only three points.

Most of Notre Dame's players had shooting woes. The Cavaliers used a 10-2 run to take a 14-7 lead with 12 minutes, 8 seconds remaining in the half.

The Irish then utilized Colson. The 6-foot-5 forward scored seven points during a 13-5 run to help Notre Dame take a 20-19 lead.

The lead changed three times in the final four minutes of the half. Shayok made a layup with 31 seconds left and the Cavaliers took a 27-26 lead into halftime.

Virginia scored the first six points of the second half but for awhile the Irish always seemed to find an answer. Vasturia made a layup with 14:49 left in the game to get Notre Dame within 38-37.

Perrantes then got hot, scoring eight of Virginia's 10 points during one stretch as the Cavaliers took control midway through the second half. His 3-pointer with 9:26 remaining gave Virginia a 50-42 lead.

The Irish got within five points on a couple of occasions, but Virginia used a 12-2 run to put the game away.
