KNOXVILLE, Tenn.–Lamonte Turner chipped in 23 points as No. 1 Tennessee thumped West Virginia 83-66 on Saturday in the SEC/ Big 12 Challenge.
The Mountaineers (9-11) jumped out to a 16-5 lead on Wesley Harris’ dunk off a Jordan McCabe steal. However, the Volunteers (18-1) took control and ended the first half with a 25-2 run.
During that run, WVU failed to score for almost 10 minutes.
The win marks the 14th consecutive victory for Tennessee, the school’s longest win streak since the 1922-23 season, where it began the season with 14 straight.
Grant Williams scored 19 points for the Vols. Jordan Bowden had 15. Admiral Schofield added 14 points and grabbed 10 boards.
Esa Ahmad tallied 16 points for the Mountaineers. Derek Culver added 15.
Beetle Bolden left the game in the second half with an apparent ankle injury.
WVU turned the ball over 24 times and made just 8-of-28 from the field in the first half.
The Mountaineers outrebounded Tennessee 37-33.
WVU shot 44 percent from the field, 38 percent from beyond the arc and 56 percent from the free throw line.
The Vols shot 48 percent from the floor, 38 percent from 3-point range and 73 percent from the charity stripe.
The Mountaineers have dropped seven of their last eight games.
WVU travels to Iowa State on Wednesday.
