The Herald Women's Premier League grand finals this Sunday have been moved to Macquarie Field after the discovery of a plovers' nest on Adamstown Oval.

In what has already been a season like no other Northern NSW Football were sent in search of a new venue after City of Newcastle workers made the discovery at Adamstown Oval on Wednesday morning.

NNSWF chief David Eland told the Newcastle Herald they were informed the ground could not be used after a media opportunity was held at the Adamstown venue Wednesday morning to promote the women's championship deciders.

"A plovers' nest was discovered on the ground after the media call and has appeared from the weekend to today," Eland said.

"Plovers' are a protected species and it can't be moved, so the games can't be played there."

NNSWF later confirmed all four grades of WPL grand finals had been moved to Macquarie Field with kick-off times to remain the same.

First grade kicks off at 5.30pm. Spectator numbers have been capped at 500 for the main game due to COVID-19 restrictions but all four games will be livestreamed through BarTV Sports on Sunday.

Mid Coast play Merewether in the 14s grand final at 9am. United play Olympic in 17s at 11.30am. Olympic will also be challenging for the reserve-grade championship against Adamstown at 2pm.
