NL Cup final clash with Airdrie will show us 'where we are' says Clyde keeper

Clyde goalkeeper David Mitchell says this afternoon's NL Cup final clash against Airdrie will show his side how much progress they've made in pre-season as they prepare for a tough Premier Sports Cup group section.

The Bully Wee are in with Kilmarnock, Morton, Stranraer and East Kilbride, and Mitchell doesn't expect any easy games.

But he says the Broadwood showdown with Ian Murray's Diamonds will show Clyde where they are, having beat Albion Rovers 3-1 yesterday.

He said: "I think it's promising. Some of the football we played was good, it's the way we like to play, and I don't think we got a chance to do that last season.

"We have players now who are maybe a wee bit more suited to that style, Mo Gomis coming in, and Aaron Splaine likes to play, but I thought we moved the ball about quite well at times.

"It's the wee daft things that are frustrating me, but we'll get there. It is still pre-season, so we'll get there with those things.

"The game against Airdrie will be good, it will give us a hint of where we are, when it comes to the League Cup games.

"You know what you get with Airdrie, they work hard and put you under pressure, so it will be a good test."

Mitchell was pleased with how Clyde played in their win over Airdrie, but after the final whistle, he was still stewing over Callum Wilson's goal for the League Two side.

He said: "It was a good work-out. I thought Albion Rovers were pretty decent, they caused us a lot of problems.

"The goal, I'm not happy with it, there were three or four mistakes that could have been dealt with, and those are the sort of things that cost us last season.

"I was a bit frustrated with that, but overall it was a good result."

Looking ahead to that League Cup section, which for Clyde starts at home to Stranraer on Tuesday, July 13, Mitchell said: "I think a lot of teams see that as pre-season games, but obviously you still want to do well.

"I think every game we've got in that group is going to be tough, East Kilbride are spending big money, there's Kilmarnock and Morton and Stranraer is always a tough game, but they're games to look forward to, at the same time."
