Nketiah, Kent, Pearce, Shaughnessy, Phillips - where Leeds United stand as transfer deadline nears

Leeds United are looking for one more new face before the summer transfer window closes and all signs suggest it will be Eddie Nketiah.

Whites chiefs are cautiously optimistic, but have high hopes the Arsenal striker will be a United player before 5pm today.

The cases of Harvey Barnes and Daniel James have been well-documented in the past. Each winger had completed medicals, chosen a squad number and sat down at Elland Road, only to see their transfers crumble at the 11th hour.

Nketiah was the subject of more than 30 enquiries over the summer at Emirates Stadium, but the Gunners whittled the list down to nine suitors and then two - Fortuna Dusseldorf and Bristol City.

Director of football Victor Orta made a late play for the frontman on Tuesday, but sold the Whites vision under Marcelo Bielsa to his friend and ex-colleague Unai Emery.

Acquiring a striker would retain a finer balance in the United squad too, while Liverpool’s Ryan Kent would be another wide man.

Kent remains an option the Whites could explore at a late stage if, for any reason, the Nketiah deal goes south.

Elsewhere, Tom Pearce should be pictured with a Wigan Athletic scarf before the day is out. The left-back should sign a three-year contract and move for close to £400,000 plus add-ons.

Barnsley had been in pole position to land the England under-21 international until late on Wednesday night, but the Latics came in with a bigger fee and better contract.

Conor Shaughnessy, who has spent the bulk of the summer training with Pearce away from Thorp Arch, is also hopeful of an exit this month.

Bolton Wanderers are understood to be furthest down the line with the Irishman, but with their takeover dragging out a move may not materialise until after the main window shuts today.

League One clubs have until the end of the month for their dealings.

Retaining Kalvin Phillips remains the biggest priority and, arguably, biggest accomplishment of the summer window.

Time is running out for any sides with the cash available to tempt United into selling and there is hope, on both sides, constructive contract talks will continue next week.
