Nketiah goes close, a familiar problem, league vs cup debate - story of Leeds United's first half vs Stoke

Leeds United went in 2-0 down to Stoke at half-time of their Carabao Cup second round clash at Elland Road as the Potters struck twice before the break.

Marcelo Bielsa made a total of eight changes from the side that saw off the Potters at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday, bringing in loan pair Helder Costa and Eddie Nketiah for their first Elland Road starts, while young midfielder duo Alfie McCalmont and Mateusz Bogusz made their full senior debuts.

Fit-again Barry Douglas had Leeds' first decent chance when he tried with lucky from range, seeing a 30-yard volley go just over the bar after 11 minutes, before Nketiah struck the post with a rasping 20-yard shot following good work by Jamie Shackleton.

The Arsenal loanee then flicked a header over the bar from a corner with half an hour played as Leeds again failed to test the recalled Jack Butland in the Stoke goal.

The visitors' pace was causing Leeds problems, as was their height from set-pieces and they would break the deadlock after 39 minutes when skipper Danny Batth headed home a Sam Clucas corner.

Five minutes later they would double their lead when Tyrese Campbell used his pace to get past Kalvin Phillips and cross for former Leeds loanee Sam Vokes to poke the ball home and put the Potters in control.

Here is how the fans saw the first half pan out...
