NIU takeaways

Nov. 12--Dialing long distance: NIU quarterback Drew Hare hit senior wide receiver Da'Ron Brown with a short sideline pass that was turned into a 64-yard touchdown play, the longest of Brown's career. Hare completed 14 of 22 passes for 190 yards.

Catch as catch can: The Huskies offense had scored 14 of its previous 15 touchdowns on the ground before Hare and Brown hooked up on their TD pass. NIU is 32-0 when rushing 45 or more times a game since 2010. They had 226 net yards rushing on 46 attempts Tuesday.

Just for kicks: NIU coach Rod Carey said he was confident in his freshman kicker Christian Hagan performing well in just his second college game. Hagan connected on his first collegiate field goal attempt from 37 yards to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead, and he made a 19-yarder to give NIU a 13-10 halftime bulge. Carey said of Hagan: "I like his moxie."

Getting signals straight: Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside, who injured his left ankle last week against Kent State, was unable to start Tuesday. Redshirt freshman Michael Julian got the nod, but also was injured in the second quarter. Wide receiver Dwight Macon, a quarterback in high school, then got the emergency call behind center and promptly threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Corey Jones.

Up next: NIU travels to Ohio University next Tuesday night.
