Nitro Circus' Josh Sheehan aims higher after death of dirt bike-riding brother

The death of world-renowned daredevil Josh Sheehan's brother in a dirt bike crash has not stopped him from pushing the limits of motocross.

Sheehan, also known as the Donnybrook Daredevil, made history in 2015 by being the first and still only person in the world to do a triple backflip on a motocross bike.

Just three months later he lost his older brother Chris, who lost control of his dirt bike and crashed into a tree in bushland in the south west of Western Australia.

Sheehan was riding half an hour ahead when he found out his brother had crashed and turned around to find him with the ambulance.

"I went from the biggest high from doing the triple flip, to a few months later the biggest low in my life when Chris died," he said.

"It was just an unfortunate thing that absolutely sucked at the time. It rocked me for a while."

Despite seeing the confronting reality of the crash, he has kept on riding.

"There's two sides, one of them is I would hate to put my family under more pressure because I would hate to put anyone under the kind of agony we went through," he said.

"But at the same time, I know Chris was a hard arse. He would say 'What are you stopping for? Don't do that, don't be weak, keep going'.

"The next couple of events were bloody hard to do but I kind of needed them at the same time to keep myself busy.

"If I didn't have riding, if I didn't have anything to keep me busy, it probably would have had a lot more of an effect on me.

"I just try remember what kind of person he was. And he was a hard arse."

Triple backflip puts Sheehan on map

Sheehan spent his childhood on the family farm doing stunts and tricks, and it was not long before he was entering competitions and turning his hobby into a career.

He completed a double backflip in 2011, and the mentality from then on was 'Why not try three backflips?'

Together with American stunt performer Travis Pastrana they spent a year testing all different set-ups.

On April 28, 2015, the daredevil performed the triple backflip, taking freestyle motocross to new heights in the process.

"I couldn't believe it finally happened. It was the most relieving day of my life," he said.

Looking to the future, Sheehan's about to take on another first — performing just up the road from his home.

Nitro Circus, an international extreme sports show, starts their Australian tour next week with the last two stops being Perth and Bunbury.

Having never done a show in Bunbury before, the extreme sportsman said he was excited to finally perform in front of family and friends.

"It's been a long time coming. But finally, about as local as I'll ever get, I'll be able to show everybody what I do for a living," he said.
