Nitish Kumar, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav to star in mega opposition Haryana rally

PATNA: Top Opposition leaders are to converge at Fatiabad, Haryana, on September 25 for a rally to mark the birth anniversary of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal in what is planned as a joint stand against the BJP-led NDA government.

INLD proposed rally near Hisar is expected to see West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, NC president Farooq Abdullah, SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal, SP patriarch Mulalyam Singh Yadav, former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, among others, share a dais and deliberate on the country’s current political situation.

The decision to invite all Opposition leaders from across the country on Devi Lal’s birth anniversary was taken during an hour-long meeting between Nitish and INLD chief and former Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala at the latter’s residence in Gurugram on Tuesday, JD(U) national secretary general KC Tyagi told TOI.

Tyagi said leaders like Mamata, Farooq Abdullah, Badal, Mulalyam, Nitish, Akhilesh and Tejashwi have confirmed they will attend the September 25 rally, while invitations are being sent to other prominent Opposition leaders across the country.

To a question, Tyagi said separate invitations were being sent by Om Prakash Chautala to many leaders, including NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, as well as Meghalaya governor Satya Pal Malik. “Who will not agree to come to Haryana to attend Devi Lal-ji’s birth anniversary event,” Tyagi replied.

“The September 25 rally will not only showcase Opposition unity but also the visible anger against the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre,” INLD chief said.
