Nissin Food Products Co. has announced that it will cancel some varieties of special Cup Noodles packaging commemorating the new era name that it had planned to release on May 1.
The company will forgo the release of two of the three commemorative packages -- those for its curry and seafood flavors -- and only issue a special edition for its regular soy-sauce flavored noodles, it said. It also plans to temporarily halt sales of miso-flavored Cup Noodles, which went on sale on April 1.
Thanks to the popularity of NHK's serial morning drama "Manpuku," based on the lives of Nissin Foods founder Momofuku Ando and his wife, sales of Cup Noodles have skyrocketed since March, with sales predicted to be 30 percent higher than last year.
The company has taken steps to boost production. However, it determined that releasing all three commemorative items would exceed its production capacity and hurt its ability to supply the entire range of its Cup Noodles products.
The commemorative packaging features the characters for "Reiwa," the new era name.
