Nissan Motor Co. has sold a business jet that former Chairman Carlos Ghosn virtually monopolized for his own use, sources have said.
The top-of-the-line jetliner was manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. of the United States, and was registered under the identification number "N155AN," which can be read as "NISSAN." It came into the spotlight when Ghosn was arrested soon after he arrived at Haneda Airport on this plane in November 2018.
According to the sources, the jet can be equipped with up to 20 seats, as well as beds and sofas. A new plane of this model is said to cost more than 7 billion yen.
Nissan had registered the plane in the United States and owned it there since 2016 through an affiliate. The jet is well known in aviation circles as "the Nissan aircraft owned by Ghosn."
According to a report Nissan submitted to the Tokyo Stock Exchange in January, Ghosn utilized this plane and other Nissan property "for the personal use of himself or his family." Nissan was forced to shoulder 4.4 million dollars (470 million yen) for fuel and other expenses.
Nissan changed the jet's identification number and registered it under the name of an American company. In January this year, however, Nissan decided to get rid of this symbol of Ghosn mixing business with pleasure. A Nissan executive official was quoted as saying it was "not appropriate to waste money amid our poor performance."
