Nissan's Shiga to step down in June when board member term expires

Nissan Motor Co. board member Toshiyuki Shiga will step down from his post at the end of his tenure in June, it has been learned.

Serving as Nissan's chief operating officer from 2005 to 2013, Shiga was the top Japanese executive in the company. For a long time, he supported the core of the company, along with former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn. Shiga recently came under the spotlight as a candidate for the post of chairman.

Speaking in an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun on Wednesday, Shiga said, "Under Nissan's current circumstances, I came to the conclusion that I should work on rebuilding the company's corporate governance system as my final task and pass the baton to the younger generation."

Shiga indicated that he will leave his post at an ordinary shareholder meeting slated for June.

Shiga joined Nissan in 1976. Under the reign of Ghosn, he was tapped for COO. However, he resigned the post in 2013 to take responsibility for the automaker's poor business performance. After serving as vice chairman, he took up his current role.
