Economic revitalization minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said at a press conference Friday that the government will ease some of its activity restrictions put in place to contain the spread of the new coronavirus from August.
The government plans to review the limits on people allowed to attend events, which now stipulates "up to 50%" of a facility's capacity.
The government will form a panel of experts on events and infectious diseases to review the guidelines. The panel will employ artificial intelligence technology to predict the dispersal of airborne droplets at event facilities to determine a balance between infection prevention and the number of people that can be in the facilities.
According to Nishimura, there have been complaints from owners and managers of event facilities that the current limitation "is so stringent we cannot make enough profit."
In August, the government will adopt a new standard for indoor events that lifts the cap on attendees where the limit of "up to 50%" is in place.
