Nirjala Ekadashi Signifance
Nirjala Ekadashi, also referred to as Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, holds immense religious and spiritual significance in Hinduism. The term “Nirjala Vrat” means observing a fast without consuming either food or water. Devotees break their fast only on Dwadashi Tithi, when water and meals are permitted again. Considered one of the strictest and most sacred Ekadashi fasts, it is observed by a large number of devotees with deep faith and devotion while offering prayers to Lord Vishnu.
Rituals Followed On Nirjala Ekadashi
Devotees usually wake up early before sunrise, take a holy bath, and wear clean clothes before beginning the vrat. Lord Vishnu is worshipped with flowers, tulsi leaves, fruits, incense sticks, and lamps.
Many devotees recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita verses, and other sacred hymns dedicated to Lord Vishnu throughout the day.
The fast begins from sunrise on Ekadashi and continues until the next day after the Dwadashi Parana, when the fast is broken following traditional rituals.
Charity And Donations Hold Special Importance
Donating food, clothes, water, fans, umbrellas, and fruits to the needy is considered highly auspicious on Nirjala Ekadashi. Since the vrat falls during the peak summer season, offering water and cooling items to people is believed to bring blessings.
