The Nippon Budokan -- the venue for judo and karate at next year's Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics -- was illuminated Tuesday for a ceremony in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
LED floodlights that were permanently installed during the building's recent renovation beautifully lightened the huge verdigris roof. And the onion-like ornament sitting atop the roof sparkled in gold to create a mystic scene as the illumination began shortly after 6 p.m.
"I wanted to create a scene that portrayed Mt. Fuji being illuminated by the clear light of a full moon," said lighting designer Motoko Ishii, 81, who worked on the lighting.
The Nippon Budokan will be illuminated from sunset to 10 p.m.
