With games like Mario Kart World, Kirby Air Riders, and Donkey Kong Bananza, the Nintendo Switch 2 has had a very strong first year. Today, Nintendo has rolled out system updates for both the newer Switch 2 and the original Switch. While this update doesn’t bring any sort of major UI overhaul or new features, it does bring some important stability improvements to both systems.
The updates began rolling out across the Switch and Switch 2 yesterday in different regions. You should see an update if you power on your Switch today. Usually, the console automatically downloads the latest system update and notifies you when it’s done. If you want to update manually, you can find the new update in the System Settings menu.
Looking Back At The Switch 2’s First Year

The Switch 2 was officially released on June 5, 2025, so technically, it’s been only six months since the console was released. Nintendo itself confirmed that the Switch 2 has already sold over 10 million units, and game sales on the platform amount to over 20 million. The crazy part is that Mario Kart World accounts for nearly half of those game sales, as it sits at 9.57 million units sold according to reports back from September 2025.
Donkey Kong Bananaza sold an impressive 3.49 million units, and it also has a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards. Of course, it is unlikely to beat the crowd favorite, Expedition 33, this year.
Compared to the Switch OLED, the version many consider to be the “definitive” version of the Switch, the Switch 2 brings a host of improvements. It features a larger 1080p display, a 120Hz refresh rate, support for HDR10, mouse controls, magnetic Joy-Cons, and a brand new design. Performance improvements are major across the board, with most titles running at 60 FPS at 1080p. This was not always common on the original Switch.
Recently, we’ve been playing and talking about Kirby Air Riders a lot, which seems to be a bit of an underrated title on the platform. It has a simple one-button control scheme, fun tracks, various racing and battle modes, and a fun story. The game is a great take on classic arcade racing chaos, and I highly recommend checking it out if you own a Switch 2 or plan on buying one. While Black Friday sales are over, you might still be able to find some deals during the holiday season.
