Nintendo doesn't want you to sell your Animal Crossing villagers for real money

Villagers like Ozzie are popular among buyers (Picture: Nintendo)

Not everything in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is sunshine and rainbows.

The popular Switch game has something of a thriving villager exchange market, which has been going since the game launched.

Players have been attempting to sell or buy the more popular villagers from the series for in-game currency and sometimes for real money.

Villagers such as Ozzie, Dom, Audie and Raymond are especially popular among gamers. Upon searching eBay, we've found someone selling what appears to be Raymond for £35.

There are other websites included Nookazon and NookMarket which have popped up and are dedicated to selling Animal Crossing items for bells, the in-game currency. It is unclear if this is something Nintendo also wants to stop.

A Nintendo spokesperson told J-Cast News that the company is aware of the villager exchange market.

“From today, we will start handling Animal Crossing real money trading (RMT)," said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson chided the selling of villagers and items appearing in the game for real money, stating that the actions are in fact against Nintendo's terms and conditions.

According to J-Cast News, players who continue to try and sell villagers and items for actual money will be penalised. There was one case of someone trying to sell Dom, a popular sheep villager. In Japan, Dom can be bought for about 5,000 yen (roughly £37).

Whether this sort of crackdown extends to places outside of Japan is currently unclear.

We have reached out to Nintendo for comment.
