Nintendo Co. has announced plans to rerelease its Game & Watch handheld device for the first time in 26 years. Pre-orders for the hit gaming item from the '80s sold out within a few hours of the company making them available on its official online store Thursday night.
The Game & Watch, priced at 5,478 yen and slated for a Nov. 13 release, will be produced for a limited time through the end of March next year.
The Game & Watch was Nintendo's first portable gaming device and sold more than 43 million units overall. Each device has a single game loaded onto it and can be used as a digital clock when the game is not being played. More than 50 varieties went on sale, laying the base for the Game Boy and other handheld gaming devices later developed by the company.
The reissued version will be installed with either Ball, the device's first game, or Super Mario Bros., Nintendo's popular side-scrolling game that marks its 35th anniversary this year.
