Nineteen cases of coronavirus now confirmed in outbreak linked to Lanarkshire call centre

Fourteen cases of coronavirus have now been confirmed at a call centre in Lanarkshire.

NHS Lanarkshire confirmed the news this evening, with an additional five cases arising from linked contacts.

It comes after Nicola Sturgeon said that the majority of the 22 new cases in Scotland in the past 24 hours would be linked to the outbreak at the Sitel call centre - which carries out a test and trace service for NHS England.

Dr David Cromie, consultant in public health medicine NHS Lanarkshire, said: Our public health team, alongside North Lanarkshire Council, continues to work closely with the employer Sitel and staff in the building who have been encouraged to have tests carried out.

"NHS Lanarkshire's incident management team has been meeting regularly to investigate.

"A total of 14 positive cases associated with Sitel's premises have been identified to date, with an additional five cases arising from linked contacts.

"We are taking all necessary steps to identify those who may have been in contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19 and to mitigate the risk of onward transmission to others.

"We would like to reassure the community that appropriate measures are being implemented."

The First Minister also confirmed earlier this afternoon that she was to chair a resilience committee concerning the outbreak - and advised that the public would be updated on whether there will be any additional safety measures in place for the area.
