A nine-year-old Girl Scout returned home from hospital on Thursday after she was shot while out selling cookies.
Sinai Miller was hit in the calf in a drive-by shooting in the parking lot of the Retreat Cooperative Apartments in Indianapolis, where she lives with her family. The bullet was fired by an man described as having dreadlocks, wearing a hoodie and driving a blue SUV.
Miller is not believed to have been the intended target.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Miller’s mother was inside the door when the shots were fired. Miller ran inside and shouted, “Mama, mama, mama. It hurt, it hurt, it hurt.”
The bullet reportedly missed Miller’s artery, and she is expected to make a full recovery.
Her stepfather, Mark Chandler, told a local NBC affiliate that Miller and her sisters were on their way to pick up cookies when the attack happened. “She was just innocent. That just don’t make sense. People going to war and not getting the right person. Getting a child. I mean, it’s unbelievable really, man,” he said.
Eighty-two children died from firearm injuries from 2011 to 2013, the Star reported.
The Girl Scouts of Indiana organisation has set up a website where people can buy cookies to help Miller meet her cookie goals.
