A nine-year-old girl is in hospital after being hit by a car while walking to school on the Gold Coast today.

She suffered head injuries following the incident at Pimpama shortly before 8.30am on Friday and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

She is in a stable condition.

Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor Jayney Shearman said several crews, including advanced and critical care paramedics, attended the scene.

"Upon our arrival, there was a nine-year-old female that had been struck at moderate speed by a vehicle," Ms Shearman said.

"As a result of that, she sustained a very nasty head injury."

Ms Shearman said the girl was unconscious at one period, however, regained consciousness and improved significantly while she was with paramedics.

"It was a closed head injury, as a result of that incident, there was some internal bleeding that occurred," she said.

"She was extremely lucky — a very, very lucky young lady."

Girl was with a family member

Police say the girl was trying to cross a road at the intersection of Dixon Drive and Augusta Boulevard when she was hit.

Ms Shearman said the girl was with a family member, and that there were many witnesses to the incident.

"It was a fairly emotional scene, as you would expect with a young child being involved," she said.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.

Police investigations are continuing and anyone who has dash-camera vision of the area at the time is advised to contact officers.
