Nine teenagers taken to hospital after taking Xanax

Teenagers have been put in hospital after taking Xanax for fun.

So far nine teens have needed hospital treatment after suffering the affects of the drug, which is often used as a sedative.

Police in Ellesmere Port said they were aware teens were using it for "recreational purposes".

Recent reports suggest the anti-anxiety drug has been popularised by celebrities and some drug dealers have been using Instagram and Facebook to sell it.

Officers are now investigating where the teenagers have been getting the medication.

In a Tweet Ellesmere Port police said: "We are aware of a number of incidents of children consuming Xanax / XO for recreational purposes.

"This is a class C drug which acts as a sedative, and has resulted in several hospital admissions.

"Enquiries are on going regarding the origin of the drug."

Last week the  Mirror Online reported  how the Xanax craze has been connected by drugs charities to 204 British deaths since 2015.

Xanax is the trade name for Aplrazolam which is a fast acting drug and around 10 times stronger than diazepam - known by the trade name Valium.

In the short term misuse of Xanax can cause over-sedation, collapsing and overdose.

Using the drug over a long period of time can result in dependency and severe withdrawal, government website Public Health Matters states.

Inspector Ian Stead told Cheshire Live : “Taking prescription drugs can be dangerous when they have not been prescribed for you by a medical professional.

“We are currently trying to establish the circumstances of what has happened and I would urge anyone who has any information to call the team here at Ellesmere Port on 101 quoting IML 369870.”
