Nine Scots police officers attacked in separate weekend assaults

Nine police officers were assaulted across Dumfries and Galloway while doing their job last weekend.

Seven of the officers were injured in separate attacks across the region as they were punched, kicked and even spat on.

None of the incidents were related.

Arrests have since been made but police say there is a concerning trend of increasing assaults towards officers across the country.

Those who were attacked last weekend are now being supported and there are plans for an increased police presence across Dumfries and Galloway to tackle the violence.

Chief Superintendent McGuire said: ‘Officers and staff work with dedication and commitment to helping people and violence and abuse against them is not simply part of the job. It causes physical and psychological harm and tackling this concerning trend of increasing assaults is a priority for Police Scotland.

“Arrests have been made in connection with the incidents and the officers who were assaulted are being supported.

"Additional officers will be deployed at key locations across Dumfries and Galloway this weekend.”
