Nine pundits react to Newcastle’s emphatic 6-1 Premier League triumph over Spurs

Newcastle’s 6-1 win over Spurs on Sunday is the first time the Magpies have scored six in the Premier League since 2010.

The emphatic victory over their top four rivals put Newcastle in the ascendancy in an “tremendous” performance. A Jacob Murphy brace either side of a Joelinton goal gave Eddie Howe’s side a three goal lead inside 10 minutes, before Alexander Isak bagged a quickfire double of his own to make it five shortly after the 20 minute mark.

Harry Kane scored a consolation goal in the second half to try and inspire his side, but fellow England forward Callum Wilson was on hand to grab the sixth for Newcastle and restore the ruthless Geordies five-goal cushion.

The statement performance was highly praised by pundits, who were equally critical of a “disgraceful” Tottenham here’s what they had to say:

Alan Shearer

Tweeting throughout the game the Premier League’s record goalscorer Alan Shearer praised yet another “brilliant” performance by Howe’s side.

Right from the off after Newcastle’s lightning start, Shearer tweeted: “Yessssss Jacob Murphy”

He was also elated after the second, tweeting: “Booooommmmmmm what a start this is. Big Joeeeeeee”

For the fourth, Willock’s splitting forward pass received high acclaim from the club legend. “Pass of the season from Willock? Sensational pass.”

Full-time, one word. “Brilliant.”

Jamie O’Hara

A dejected Jamie O’Hara spoke on how this result is the nail in the coffin with his support of this group of players.

“I’m sick and tired of watching Tottenham,” he told talkSport. “I’m actually done with them this season now. I’m not going to watch them again because they’re a disgrace.

That yesterday was an absolute disgrace. Watching that yesterday was an absolute disaster. An absolutely disgraceful football team and they should be ashamed of themselves.”

Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher was amongst the first to comment post-match, saying “Newcastle are brilliant, they have been all season. Tottenham are a disgrace!

How have they gone to a back four for the first time this season, with Porro a full back that can’t defend & Perisic who is a winger. Get a proper manager in right now, not Conte’s mate.”

Jamie Redknapp

“The Champions League is obviously where you want to be to get the best players, of course they want to be playing in the Champions League,” said ex-Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp on his former side post-match. “You can still do it if you pay enough and you get the right recruitment in and things can change very quickly.

“Now the manager is obviously going to be important, who they’re getting next must have a plan. It made no sense to keep a manager that was so heavily affiliated to the last manager. That made no sense.”

Ally McCoist

It is Redknapp’s father, Harry, who has been touted by Ally McCoist as a potential replacement if Stellini does get sacked on the back of this Newcastle-inflicted hammering

“We’ve all played in games where it’s poor and you get a little bit of a going over. I think the very least that Tottenham fans could expect is a level of effort, a level of commitment,” McCoist told talkSport this morning.

“I thought it was really really poor, and I don’t see it going to get any better. It’s not an ideal situation, honest to God I would go to Harry Redknapp and ask him to take [Spurs] to the end of the season.”

Chris Waddle

Former Magpie and Spurs legend Chris Waddle has also spoke on Redknapp, and has urged the North London outfit to reimburse their travelling fans. “I want the club to apologise to the fans and to reimburse them,” Waddle told the Mirror. They should get their money back. It was a shambles. It was that bad. They made a 600 mile trip to see players do that.

“[Antonio] Conte has it right about this lot. They don’t like pressure, they don’t like hard work. They didn’t turn up in that first 20 minutes.‌

“Newcastle and Spurs are similar clubs. I’ve played for them both. When you pull on those shirts it gets your heart pumping faster. It should mean something.

“But look at the goals: Spurs players standing watching, half-hearted headers, no tackling, watching Newcastle players run through the defence on goal.”

Waddle has named the man who he thinks should have been put in temporary charge for the rest of the season. He added: “Why let Conte go and put his assistant who plays the same way in charge.

“I’d have had Harry Redknapp in charge and told them to have a go. Spurs' tradition is the same as Newcastle’s - they like some entertainment.

“This is a side who are fifth, not a relegation club. A side who almost beat Milan in the Champions League.”

Jeff Stelling

It is not only Cristian Stellini’s future that is being discussed. Jeff Stelling believes Harry Kane may be considering calling an end to his time at Spurs. “Harry Kane must be thinking ‘I am out of here ASAP’,” shared Stelling.

James Olley

Speaking to ESPN, football writer and pundit James Olley told them that it “must be the worst start to a Premier League game by any team in history. I’ve never seen anything like that. We have seen capitulations.

“We saw one a few weeks ago when Manchester United lost 7-0 at Liverpool, but given the stakes here and the 11v11 at kick-off I have never seen a team be that abject, clueless, lost as Tottenham were in that opening 20,” he continued.

“It looked like when they walked out they didn’t seem to know who was supposed to be marking who.

“Newcastle has probably sealed third today, or certainly put enough distance between Newcastle and Tottenham to think it’s Newcastle and Manchester United alone battling for that third spot.”

Janusz Michallik

Also speaking to ESPN, retired American international Janusz Michallik said: “If you look at Newcastle as a whole they’ve been tremendous.

“If you look at Murphy and you look at [Joe] Willock, who had a wonderful pass. There isn’t one player who had an off game. Add to it Kieran Trippier who may be, in my opinion, was the most important transfer that they’ve made not only because he’s the captain, but the way he organises everything.

“Sean Longstaff, how much better has he got under Howe? It’s been absolutely tremendous, almost as if that midfield doesn’t function the same without him. He just came back in this game and was absolutely wonderful.”
