Nine people have been killed in India after the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by falling boulders.

The tragic incident took place in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.

The vehicle was carrying 11 people and the two survivors sustained injuries, according to News agency ANI.

Video footage showed the moment boulders fell down a mountain and crashed into the village of Chitkul, located in the Himalayas.

It snapped a bridge in two while roads and homes were damaged by the rockfall.

The tourists from Delhi were making the journey along a road from Chitkul to the nearby village of Sangla in a minivan before the rockfall.

President Ram Nath Kovind told The Hindustan Times: “Deeply saddened by the news of the death of many people in a landslide in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh.

“Express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured people a speedy recovery.”

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was sending his "heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives".

“All arrangements are being made for the treatment of those injured in the accident," Mr Modi tweeted.

He added all those affected would be given access to a government relief fund.

The chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jairam Thakur, described the incident as "heart-wrenching".

India is in monsoon season, with parts of the country hit by landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rains.

The monsoon season lasts from June to September each year.
