A total of nine people were taken to hospital after horror crashes involving a massive 12 vehicles on either side of a major Scots road today.
Emergency services raced to the A74(M) near junction 16 at Johnstonebridge following reports of a collision at around 2.10pm.
It has now emerged there was eight vehicles involved in the pile up with seven people taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.
Some of those hurt are said to have 'serious injuries'.
The northbound carriageway was closed and reopened at 4.25pm.
Shortly after the reopening, at 4.35pm, emergency services were called to another crash on the road- this time southbound and just north of junction 15.
The crash involved four vehicles and injured three- of which two were hospitalised.
Injuries are said to be minor in this crash.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said of the earlier incident: “We were called around 2.10pm on Friday, 26 March, to a report of a road crash involving eight vehicles on the A74(M) northbound near junction 16 at Johnstonebridge, Moffat.
“Seven people were taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, some with serious injuries. The northbound carriageway was closed and re-opened around 4.35pm.”
She added on the more recent crash: “We were called around 4.35pm on Friday, 26 March, to a report of a road crash involving four vehicles on the A74(M) southbound, just north of junction 15.
“Three people sustained minor injuries and two of them were taken to hospital. The southbound carriageway was partially blocked and re-opened around 6.15pm.”
