Nine out of 10 demand Clean Air Zone rethink

The Greater Manchester Clean Air Zone (CAZ) plans have triggered a huge outcry among the people of Manchester, with 91% of people we surveyed saying they think the Mayor, councils and government need to resume negotiations.

The controversial scheme, set to begin introduction in May, could 'cripple hardworking people', it's been claimed.

It's understood the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) are aiming to discuss further the details with the government although this has yet to be officially confirmed..

Mayor Andy Burnham has warned that only the government can change the scheme or its deadline.

One issue highlighted in our survey was the availability of cleaner energy vehicles, with 92% of people saying they felt that the funding available to replace polluting vehicles was inadequate.

And 88% of people surveyed also felt the scheme should be paused due to supply problems with cleaner vehicles.

Some £120 million of funding has been awarded to Greater Manchester to help eligible businesses, organisations and individuals move towards greener vehicles, but many claim that this will not fully cover the cost of replacing or retrofitting their vehicles.

The rules of the scheme were mostly followed by those we surveyed - with 74% saying they understood them - but 90% of those we asked felt that the CAZ was not the best way to achieve cleaner air in Greater Manchester.

People answering the survey also expressed concerns over potential expansion of the scheme, with 91% believing it would eventually be extended to all vehicles.
