Nine new laws and changes coming into force in July from travel to furlough

Tomorrow marks the start of a new month and with it comes a whole host of new laws and changes that are coming into force.

From travel changes to furlough and new legislation on driving, there will be a lot of new rules that people need to be aware of.

This includes the lifting of the remaining lockdown restrictions in England - dubbed "freedom day" - which was moved from June 21 to July 19.

Here are all the new laws and how they could affect you, as reported by Birmingham Live.

Lockdown restrictions

Lockdown restrictions will continue until July 19 at least.

June 21 was due to mark the end of Covid-19 measures in England.

But the Government won the vote to delay the final stage of England's roadmap to control the spread of the Delta variant.

Travel review

The Government has said the lists will be updated every three weeks.

The most recent came on June 24 - meaning the next would be in mid-July.

The Department for Transport has said: “These regular review points will allow the Government to balance helping the public to understand Covid requirements when travelling to England while allowing us to constantly evaluate the risk for different countries.”

Marriage Visitor visa

You must apply for a Marriage Visitor visa if you want to visit the UK to get married or register a civil partnership.

From 1 July 2021, you’ll need to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa unless one of the following applies:

  • you have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • you have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme, and you have not got a decision yet
  • you’re an Irish citizen

New Graduate Visa

The new Graduate route will be open for applications from 1 July 2021. This visa category will allow international students, who have successfully completed their higher education either as a Student or Tier 4 migrant, to apply for a 2 or 3 year visa to work (including self-employment).

Right to work

From 1 July 2021, new rules for right to work checks will apply. EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens will need to provide evidence of lawful immigration status in the UK.

Outdoor civil wedding and partnership registrations to be legalised

This comes into force on July 1.

Outdoor civil wedding and partnership ceremonies in England and Wales are set to be legalised for the first time – offering greater choice to couples in a boost to the wedding sector.

Driving licences

Driving licences that expired between February and November 2020 were extended by 11 months last year due to the pandemic.

This means licences that were due to run out in August 2020 will now become defunct from July 2021.

Experts at Peter Barden have warned those who have a card expiring next month will need to renew their licence before the end of June to avoid being caught out.

Drivers are likely to be issued a £1,000 fine and between three and six penalty points for not driving with a valid licence.

Furlough changes

From July 2021, employers will need to contribute to furlough pay for unworked hours, starting with a 10 per cent contribution in July and rising to a 20 per cent contribution from August until the Scheme closes at the end of September 2021. The government will contribute 70 per cent and 60 per cent respectively.

COVID-19 and statutory sick pay

Workers must pay employees from the first ‘qualifying day’ they’re off work. The date will depend on why they’re off work.

Bosses must pay on 6 July 2020 - if someone in their support bubble (or extended household in Scotland or Wales) has symptoms or has tested positive for COVID-19
