Nine new flats planned near North Street could get the go-ahead this week

Plans to build a block of nine flats near North Street in south Bristol could be given the go-ahead tomorrow (Wednesday, April 24).

The proposals would see a three-storey building built at 2 Smyth Road in the Ashton part of the Southville council ward, close to the edge of Bedminster.

The current building - which was a plumbers’ merchants that is now vacant - would be demolished.

In its place a single block of flats would be built. The apartments would be arranged across three floors and would comprise four one-bedroom flats and five two-bedroom flats.

The site is situated on a corner plot at the junction of Smyth Road, Carrington Road and Balfour Road.

It is proposed that the development would be ‘car free’ which means that no off-street vehicular parking has been proposed.

And following concerns raised by ward councillor Charlie Bolton, Bristol City Council planning officers have recommended that anyone living in the flats would be “ineligible for resident permits”.

The developers have incorporated cycle parking into the scheme as well as measures to ensure that any future residents would receive a membership to a local ‘Car Club’.

The council’s development control B committee is due to discuss the scheme at a meeting on Wednesday.

It has been recommended for approval by officers despite the authority receiving 23 objections to the plans.

Most of the concerns from neighbours related to the height of the proposed development - which is an extra storey than the current building - as well as concerns about parking, loss of light and insufficient cycle and bin storage.

There were also concerns about the design not being in keeping with the surrounding area.

But in a report to the planning committee officers said the proposals “represent sustainable development in an area where higher density residential development would be appropriate”.

The report stated: “Officers are satisfied that the proposed development represents good quality design which would not cause significant detrimental impact on the amenities of neighbouring occupiers.”
