Nine more patients die in North East hospitals after contracting coronavirus

Nine more people have died in North East hospitals after contracting coronavirus.

A total of 122 deaths were reported by NHS England on Monday afternoon, taking the total number of Covid-19-related fatalities in England hospitals to 24,739.

Of these, 27 occurred on May 17, 59 were confirmed on May 16 and 29 were reported on May 15.

There were also six that happened on May 14 and one on May 13.

In the North East, South Tyneside and Sunderland recorded the most deaths with three while North Tees and Hartlepool reported two.

Meanwhile, the Government announced earlier today that a loss or changed sense of taste or smell are to be added to the NHS coronavirus symptoms list.

This came weeks after experts first raised concerns that Covid-19 cases are being missed.
