Nine in 10 people want fireworks banned from sale, survey finds

With Bonfire Night taking place tonight (5th November), we asked what your thoughts were on the tradition of fireworks.

While popular, fireworks and displays can also be controversial, with reports over the past week of anti-social behaviour with fireworks as well as disturbances caused at a dog shelter by a display.

And when we asked you about fireworks, several concerns were raised.

91% of people surveyed felt that fireworks should not be publicly available, with 91% also feeling that unofficial firework displays should be banned.

People also commented their concerns, with one person saying: “Ban them...only professional firework displays should be allowed by licensed and regulated industry professionals.”

Another person said: “They are a waste of money and should be used by trained professionals only. The bigger units you can buy for £100 would do massive damage if used wrongly!”

“I'm not a kill joy but I do think they should be used for organised displays only,” said another.

This reflected what you said in our survey, with 64% of people agreeing that officially run displays (such as ones run by the council) should still be allowed to go ahead.

One of the main reasons those surveyed gave against fireworks was due to safety, with 81% of people feeling that fireworks are too dangerous and 36% of people saying they had experienced personal threat or harm from fireworks.

Another key thing you told us about was pets, with 76% of people surveyed saying they’d had or have a pet who has been upset by fireworks.

Readers also commented with their feelings, with one saying: “Fireworks = inflicting suffering on innocent animals and polluting the environment for no reason whatsoever.”

“Ban fireworks from general sale ! They are scaring animals,” said another, while someone else added: “I have a cat and I hate this time also new year's eve.”

86% of people surveyed also felt that more should be done for animal welfare on Bonfire Night such as encouraging the use of low noise fireworks only.
