Nine comedy characters from Chewin' the Fat that we still love today

New channel BBC Scotland is offering up some comedy classics with a time-travelling trawl back to the 90s for Saturday nights.

Starting tonight, the BBC Scotland is kicking off a 90s season this weekend will ride over the hill and zoom onto the screen with the first episodes of Your Cheatin’ Heart and The High Life set to be screened.

And as part of the BBC Scotland is kicking off a 90s season this weekend , they're showing even more fun from the decade with some classic Chewin’ the Fat compilations, perfect for filling that Still Game void we all still have.

There's a massive Game of Thrones quiz at the Cathouse next week

Iconic sketches from Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan’s previous comedy hit, which launched in 1999, will be shown.

And ahead of the programme, we've drawn up a list of some of the characters we still remember fondly....

The Lonely Shopkeeper

Karen Dunbar's portrayal of a lonely woman working in a corner shop who took a bit too much to do the lives of her customers has stayed with us through the years. We wonder if she's still "stuck in the shop, day after day after day."

The Big Man

We're too terrified not to mention him.

The Lighthouse Keepers

Always wondered why people in Glasgow say 'Gonnae no dae that?' so much? This is why.

Gary and James AKA. The Banter Boys

This pair of west end dwellers loved nothing more than soaking up the atmosphere of the gritty side of city life - taking great delight from the Glaswegian accent and sense of humour.

Ronald Villiers

He was the world's worst actor with the most monotone of voices to boot.

"Ah can dae that," he'd say, but he couldn't.

Jack and Victor

Remember these two? Minor characters who never really amounted to much.

Don't know why they bothered with this pair TBH.

Harry, Linda and George

Harry was a verbally abusive husband who always had something to complain about to long-suffering Linda, but she always got the last laugh with family friend George at the end of sketches.

The Smokers

Funny and that but the voice boxes still give us nightmares. Even the cat had one.

The chemistry teacher

Highly-strung, sexually repressed, very easily offended. Hilarious and apparently based on Karen Dunbar's own teacher.

"Right, Glasgow, that's enough of that!"

Chewin' The Fat airs on BBC Scotland tonight at 10.20pm.
