Nine arrested after searches in Cork, Dublin, Laois and Kerry in relation to New IRA activities

Gardai carried out searches across numerous counties yesterday as part of ongoing operations to combat activities of the new IRA.

Searches were carried out at locations in Dublin, Laois, Cork and Kerry.

The searches were in support of an operation led by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), Cork Beo reports.

In a statement An Garda Siochana said:"The searches were conducted by members of the Special Detective Unit assisted by local Gardaí and Regional Armed Support Units.

"An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time."

The PSNI have confirmed this morning that nine people were arrested in relation to the searches however the locations of the arrests are not known.

Crime Operations Assistant Chief Constable Barbara Gray said:"I can confirm that nine people were arrested on Tuesday under the Terrorism Act in connection with an ongoing investigation into the activities of the new IRA. All nine remain in custody.

"The seven men and two women, aged between 26 and 50, were arrested as part of Operation Arbacia.

"They are currently in Musgrave Serious Crime Suite where they continue to be questioned on suspicion of a wide range of terrorist activity."
