Nile Wilson's Dancing on Ice final skate 'not safe' admits Leeds star

Dancing on Ice winner Nile Wilson has joked his final routine shouldn't have been cleared by health and safety.

The Leeds-born gymnast and dance partner Olivia Smart impressed viewers and judges with a Dancing on Ice first during their epic performance on Sunday, March 12. Not only did Nile successfully attempt the headbanger move, which saw him being picked up by his ankles and spun around, he also did a handstand on two scaffolding poles held up by other skaters.

The 27-year-old was the first male contestant to try the terrifying headbanger move which is actually banned from international ice skating competitions. Speaking on This Morning on March 13, he revealed the handstand was equally dangerous.

He told ITV hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: "That, specifically, it shouldn't have been cleared by health and safety. It was four men holding scaffolding poles while I'm doing a handstand two meters in the air."

Holly added: "Normally the equipment is bolted to the floor, that was just held up by four people."

The Olympic bronze medal-winning athlete explained that he had wanted to bring something different to the show and that it hadn't necessarily been about winning for him and Olivia. He also said being a gymnast gave him an advantage during the competition.

He told Holly and Phil: "I said to Olivia at the very beginning 'I just want to get to get good at skating. We are athletes and this is her world and her sport and look, gymnastics, it does help.

"I've been asked so many times 'do you think it's an advantage?' - of course it is. I've not said that throughout the whole process but the fundamental body awareness that gymnastics can give you just allowed me to watch Olivia do a trick and just do it."

Over the past few weeks, Nile and Sheffield's Olivia continuously ranked at the top of the leaderboard and left viewers in tears with their moving dancing routine that told the story of Nile's mental health journey.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am to 12.30pm on ITV1.
