Nikos Dabizas' son signs for Newcastle... Benfield, not United

Northern League Division One club Newcastle Benfield have completed the signing of Greek defender Konstantinos Dabizas – son of former Newcastle United centre-back Nikos Dabizas.

The Sam Smith’s Park club confirmed the addition of the 18-year-old on Wednesday night and he will go straight into their squad for Saturday’s FA Vase Second Round tie against Guisborough Town.

Dabizas Junior has been in the North East for the last few months and made an appearance for Gateshead in their pre-season friendly at Consett.

He has also spent time training with National League club Hartlepool United – but he will now resume his career in the Northern League with Benfield.

Player-assistant manager and former Magpies striker Paul Brayson told Chronicle Live: “He is just a young lad, but he looks big and strong.

“From what we have seen, he has a lot of potential and the signing has worked out well for both parties.

“He was looking for a club and we have a few injuries and we needed a defender.

“He looks like he has all of the capability to be a very good player for us and hopefully the deal will work out for us both.

“Obviously we know that his Dad will bring some publicity – but we wouldn’t have signed him if we didn’t think he could do a job for us.”
